Joyce was born to Johnny Floyce Vaughn and Carrie Keefer Vaughn in Bryan, Texas.  She attended Bryan schools and graduated from Stephen F Austin High school in 1969.  Joyce had the calling and a gift for nursing. She earned her nursing license and was fortunate to have a successful nursing career spanning 45 years.

Joyce married in her early 20’s and began her family shortly after.  She had two children, Tami and Kevin whom she loved with all her heart. Joyce frequently spoke fondly about the years she was able to take them to both Sunday School and to Bible school.

She spent her last ten years living in China Spring near her sister, Dessie, whom Joyce loved dearly. They had a treasured relationship.  The hours they spent watching old reruns and Wheel of Fortune would produce plenty of laughs and giggles.

Some character traits that Joyce readily displayed were most certainly  love and compassion. This was recently lived out when she put her own life on hold for 18 months in order to lovingly provide nursing care to her sweet sister-in-law that suffered with ALS. She selflessly, provided love and care to many friends and family.

Joyce was not only called to nursing, but also served her Savior as a prayer warrior.  She strongly believed God called her into the Intercessory Prayer ministry and she was faithful to that calling.  Joyce prayed for many people daily, especially her children and grandchildren. Her quiet soul touched and led many to Christ. Joyce also loved her church and her pastor.  Another area of service that was dear to her heart was as a children’s Sunday School teacher. Joyce continued to serve in that capacity until her death.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Floyce and Carrie Vaughn; sister, Bernice Pettit; brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Cecil Vaughn.

Joyce is survived by her children, Kevin and Tami (Michael); granddaughters, Mackenzie Rose, Haily Rose, BreAnna Garrett (Cody); great grandsons, Coy and Case Garrett; sister, Dessie Campbell (Don), and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks  to First Baptist China Spring for their kindness and compassion for Joyce.

Condolence Messages

  1. So very sorry for your loss. Rhonda always spoke kindly of her and the relationship with her sister. Your family is in our prayers.

  2. Joyce was a member of our women’s Sunday school class at Hillcrest Baptist Church several years ago. I enjoyed knowing Joyce. She was a great story teller and full of personality. So sorry to hear of her passing. God bless.

  3. Joyce was a wonderful Christain and compassionate nurse. I was privileged to work with her when she worked as a LVN at Crestview Retirement Community in Bryan, Texas. Those in her care always felt safe, loved, and knew all their care needs would be met with her gentle hands. My mind sees Jesus meeting he with open arms “Well done faithful servant… Come share your master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:21
