Mildred “Mickey” Uptmore

Mildred “Mickey” Uptmore, 91, of China Spring, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2019.

Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Monday, August 12, at First Baptist Church of China Spring.

Mickey Herbelin was born November 2, 1927,  near Ross, Texas.  She was the last of eight children born to George Washington and Della Lou (Lassetter) Herbelin.  She grew up and attended schools there.

She met A.J. Uptmore, who had just returned from WWII, in a cookie and sweet factory in Waco, where she worked, and he was a cookie salesman.  A short engagement followed and the couple got married April 27, 1946.

Three children were born to their marriage, Danny, Terry, and Brenda.  She has spent nearly all of her life being a housewife and helping to run the family farm.  They first lived on the Virgie Umbersom place in China Spring, and then in 1970, moved to Talbert Ranch Road, where they built a home and continued their farming life.  She survived a tornado that hit their home in 1976, destroying much of it.

Mickey was involved in Baptist Churches in China Spring all of her married life and was active in helping in a variety of ways.  She was also active in her Civic Club and enjoyed working to help make the community of China Spring better through the years, in community and school activities.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and fishing.  She was a superb pickle canner, and also enjoyed making a variety of jams and jellies.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed a number of different kinds of books.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.   She had a vivacious smile, a loving disposition, and had a wonderful outlook on life.   She was independent and continued to live on the farm through a variety of different challenges.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years A.J.; her parents; all of her siblings; and one granddaughter.

She is survived by two sons, Danny Uptmore and wife, Vicki, of Hewitt, and Terry Uptmore and wife, Danida, of McGregor; daughter, Brenda Smith and husband, Jerry, of Clifton; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.

Memorials may be made to the China Spring Volunteer Fire Department or First Baptist Church of China Spring.

Dear Danny, Terry and Brenda, and extended family, I feel so very sad at the passing of your Very Special Mother. I know your loss is great, and leaves a cavern in your hearts. I loved Mickey, and your father so very much. They were just the best Christian, loving and wonderful parents anyone could ever wish for. The were indeed shining examples for all of us. They will be forever remembered by my family, and I’m sure countless others, as having filled a huge, special place in our lives that simply can’t be filled. The memory of A.J. And Mickey Uptmore leaves a warm and loving feeling that will remain far past their time on this Earth. I know they’re together, still loving you and each other as they most surely were welcomed through those pearly gates.

With Much Love, and our Prayers for your family at this most difficult time,
Nancy Yankie Sidarous and the rest of The Yankie Family

  6. Jim and Mary Wetterman

Your parents were such a special couple. They served as role models for many young people in the community. They were an important part of our lives. I did come and help her with you kids when she was busy canning. I loved it. I will have you in my thoughts and prayers as you lay her to rest and adjust to the world without her.

  7. Mickey always loved Weldon’s chicken and dumplings. She was a loving person and will be dearly missed.

  8. As I rejoice that she is in Heaven and healed, I pray for healing for the hurt that the family has to go through. I was a church member at Grace Baptist Church, and Mickey was a wonderful lady to have beside me. Full of Christian love, and she could comfort you with her smile and a little knowledge about life. I am blessed to have known her. She was a funny and sweet soul.

  13. I am so sorry that I was unable to make the funeral. I have many fond memories of Aunt Mickey. She taught me how to make butter without a churn. She also taught me how to make night time gravy and meat (water instead of milk). I loved being around her with her laugh.

    • Thank you, Laura. I hear you are making a move to the big city of Hico. It is a nice town but very different from the city. We wish you the best as you make a life adventure.
