“ A message from Dustin, Dax and Zane Hicks. Also, from her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews and cousins”.
We cannot thank Hillside Medical Lodge, the staff, nurses, med aids, cooks, laundry staff, the staff who took her out to smoke, bought her Dr Peppers, decorated her room, let her son stay till 2AM, snuck her sandwiches when the food wasn’t her favorite, the Hillside residents/patients and many more for the care you gave my mom over the last 7 months. There was no better place for our Peggy than being at Hillside and being comforted by Kindred Hospice.
No words can express the extra miles you went for her during her care and especially towards the end. She lived her last days around true friends whom she actually considered family more than anything and loved being around former patients she took care of for so long that she still kept making sure their well-being was #1. From my family to yours, thank you.
No words can express how much we appreciate each and everyone one of the staff who wears a Hillside scrub and I know Peggy was proud to be a part of the Hillside Family and proud to wear those same scrubs. She was never alone, ever. Even towards the end. Even when COVID kept me out. From now on when you wear purple please remember my mom, a sister, an aunt and her proudest title “Mammy.”
Let her compassion for her patients and friends live on forever. My mom’s shift is over. Please pass down a little bit of her to young healthcare workers in your career for many years to come to keep her memory alive. Thank You, we love y’all. We are forever family. From Dustin, Dax, Zane Hicks and the entire family of Peggy.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
A second post:
One of the last times I got to hang out with her and just be a normal mom and son. When she arrived at Hillside, I’d get off work, pick up a few packs of Winstons, a 12 pack of Dr Pepper and whatever she wanted for dinner. She was lucid all the time, we’d watch a few hours of Law & Order and The First 48. We’d gossip about people, talk about Dax and Zane but the best times would be just sitting there doing nothin. All she cared about was Dax’s Challenger Games and how many dang sports Zane was kicking but in. I’d show her videos and we’d talk about family and her wanting to go home. We’d talk about how her time was coming to an end and things she wanted me to get accomplished for her. I’d read the paper for her and of course her co workers and the patients she use to take care of would visit too. I wish we couldn’t done that for the next 5 months but COVID and her health wouldn’t allow it.
I’ll miss driving 2 hours round trip, getting home late and doing it again the next day BUT now I know Nyssa has taken over for me and I am certainly at peace with that.
I am definitely a momma’s boy but I can’t be selfish anymore and I guess I’ll let my big sister finally get sometime with her.
I love you mom, Dax and Zane love you too and they haven’t stopped talking about how you’re free now.
Dax and Zane have taught me a lot and there’s no doubt they know I’m hurting but they have comforted each other and me in only ways that God can guide.
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone. I’m ready to lay her to rest so that the 1000’s and 1000’s of great memories overtake the last year of suffering. And it will.
Per Mom’s wishes, she is being cremated and her remains will be placed beside her plot at Mart Cemetery besides my sister. I will update on when (it will be a small graveside service only) and I’m still trying to finalize the obituary. We’re in no rush but we are hoping for July 9th or 10th. I will update everyone when it’s finalized. Thank you again to everyone.“
“ The last time she got to see her babies Dax and Zane before she passed a couple days before she passed.
It was a total surprise for her, we kept it a secret. She had been sad and lonely because em she had not seen them in months. Look at her face. The first time I’ve seen her that happy since we brought Dax and Z home. Dax was her first grand baby. The first always hold a special place in a grandparents heart, especially when you’re as special as Dax.
Mom moved into our pool house after Dax’s injury and was there for us new parents being a grandmother first and a veteran nurse 2nd. There’s no way Dax would be the great young man he is today without his Mammy. When other family members were no where to be found, thinking we had a broken child with no chance of living a life worth it, my mom made DAMN sure she’d help Heather, Lou Anne and I prove them wrong. She was there all the time. Taking care of him, giving us respite and her extensive medical knowledge. We couldn’t of done it without her and I am thankful for that. She prepared us and most importantly calmed us. She is as responsible for his formidable years as us parents. Thank you mom. Dax misses you probably the most.”
Third Post:
The last few months of her life she kept the same attitude as always. Especially for the 2020 graduates and beyond.
Go into healthcare. My mom raised two kids while working crappy dead end jobs all while going to nursing school. Something bigger was planned for her life.
Night school at MCC and she graduated on time with her RN, raised two kids, cooked dinner, cleaned house, attended school functions and graduated!!!
I was only 7-10 years old when she was in school and I vividly remember the sacrifices my dad and her made.
She did it, graduated and had a great career in many many fields.
She begged me to go into healthcare, Nyssa too. Nyssa was on her way but she passed away before she got the chance.
She always told young people exactly what the marker board says below Just because she’s gone now, you should still follow her advice.
“Go Into Healthcare” -Peggy Hicks RN“
Fourth Post:
“ Going thru pics of mom. Gonna share a few. Mammy always jump at the chance to watch Dax and Z so that Heather and I could get away for the weekend. A young baby Z and a toddler in wheelchair didn’t overwhelm her one bit. She begged to watch them for hours at a time, several times overnight. Best Mammy ever.”

Print Obituary & Condolences
Knew Peggy in my teenage years, dated her brother Steve for awhile. She was fun, free spirited, joyful and like all of us, had her own personal challenges to work through. We partied a little together , even though I was 5 years younger, but she never pushed me away because of my age. Very fond memories. RIP Peggy. My sincerest sympathies to the family
Peggy was a friend when we were young. Tommy and I both went to school with her and I used to visit with her often. She was a great friend and I am sure a wonderful caring nurse. Many fond memories of her . Praying for the family at this time.
