LaVonne Kay DeBerry

k.2019 obit

LaVonne Kay DeBerry, 78, of China Spring, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 3, 2020.

There will be a private celebration of Kay’s life with her family.

Kay was born in Odessa on December 24, 1941, to Vernon and Ruth DeBerry. She grew up in Odessa and attended Odessa High School. Kay was of the Baptist faith and came to know the Lord as a youth. Kay worked in the insurance and oil industries in Odessa, El Paso, and Midland before retiring in 2007 when she moved to Eden and lived until 2019. While in Eden she enjoyed volunteer work, serving on the Concho County Hospital Auxiliary, and was a member of First Baptist Church before moving to China Spring in 2019. Kay loved being outdoors working in her yard and she especially loved animals of all kinds.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Ruth DeBerry; and brother, Anthony Keith (Tony) DeBerry.

Kay is survived by her sister, Julia DeBerry Shaver and husband, Billy Ed; nieces, Jennifer Culbertson, Kristie Shaver Kwan, Alison DeBerry and Amanda DeBerry Dain; nephews, Jeremy Shaver and Clark DeBerry; Godchild, Angie Jaggears; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins and will be missed by all.

The family would like to acknowledge a special thank you to everyone at Providence Hospice, especially Chelle, Jennie, Kimberlee, Tish, Merry, Soraya, and Sundi for the compassion, love, and personal care they gave Kay.

Memorial donations may be made to Providence Hospice (Community Hospice of Texas).

  2. So Sorry Kay passing but thankful this is not the end as she is now in paradise seeing things we
    Can not even imagine ,!
God Bless all her Family and friends

    • Gary, we are grateful this isn’t the end. While we miss Kay, we are thankful she no longer struggles for each breath and that she is free of all earthly infirmities.

  3. Kay was a very special lady, a thoughtful and thankful daughter, a loving sister, and to me a very special cousin. Kay was the world’s best and most famous “cat lover”. No telling how many she had in her lifetime, but they were treated very well, believe me. She could squeeze a nickel til it hollered, and yet she was not a stingy person. There are many stories that will pass through the family in future years as we share memories about Kay. She will never be forgotten in this family as she touched each and every one of us in some way or another. She will be missed very much, but we will see her again someday. She was a hoot, and we all loved her.

  4. Rest In Peace dear cousin. May light perpetual shine upon you! So sorry she is no longer with us.
    Condolences to all of you!
    Much love,
    Tricia

  6. It was such a pleasure and joy to spend time with Kay and your family. She will be missed. You are all in our prayers at Providence Hospice (Community Healthcare of Texas).

  7. So sorry to hear this. Kay and I were in the same sorority. She was gentle and funny. I really missed her when she moved to Eden. Now she is with God. Rest in peace sweet friend.

  8. I’m so sorry to hear of Kay’s passing but know she is in that magnificent place in the sky!! I worked with Kay way back at a home health agency in Midland. I’m forever grateful to have crossed paths with her in my life here. See you on the other side Miss Kay!!

  9. I was thinking this morning of Kay, for some “out of the blue” reason. And I have lost track of her through the last decade, and now see her obituary. That she died almost a year ago is really sad and I didn’t know. She was my mother’s (Marlene DeBerry) cousin and I got to know her on a visit or two to Odessa/Midland and a Thanksgiving reunion of the DeBerry’s in OKC in about 2000 something. Kay was such a funny lady—her delivery was dry as a bone, but she had a tiny smile underneath whatever she said to make you laugh. She had what seemed like 22 turtles, from teeny to average sized boxers all over her back yard and she fed and spent time with them. And then she had almost as many cats! But mostly they were inside….towers, cages, sofas, carpeted loungers—she adored all those cats and would tell you about their very distinct personalities! I’m also a cat lover and could see her compassion and quirkiness all rolled into one. I will miss Kay and that gravely sassy voice she had and her wry observations of people. She was one of a kind. Julia, my condolences to you and the rest of the DeBerry clan, and to Neeva, her funny side-kick. RIP, Kay and we will see you in a flash soon enough! If you contacted me today, thank you.🙏
