EARLY LIFE

Doris Heslop was born Dorris Lillian Soderman (her dad spelled it with two R’s) on May 11, 1928 at 7 am in their home in El Campo, Texas. She was the fourth child of Ernest Julius Soderman and Myrtle Johnson. She lived in El Campo until her marriage in 1947.

SCHOOLING AND WORK

Doris went to El Campo High School and took business classes following high school. During high school, she worked at Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton as a candy striper (volunteer). She attended to those service men coming home from World War II.
She began working at Montgomery Wards as a salesclerk in Ladies Sportswear in 1967 and eventually became manager of that department.
Her pride and joy were family and church. She loved being a mom, providing a caring, encouraging and Christian environment for all of her children.
She attended First Lutheran Church in El Campo as a child. Her church family was very near and dear to her and in her later years she attended First Baptist Church in Columbus Texas and her last church membership was at Timber Crest Baptist Church in Waco.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

In 1945, Doris met Edwin Louis Whiddon and they were married on January 1, 1947 for 29 years. They had 2 children, Wanda Jean Whiddon and Nancy Ann Whiddon. After Ed died on November 20, 1976, she married Muriel Elliott Heslop. They met at Montgomery Wards, where he also worked. They dated and then married on November 24, 1977. They were also married for 29 years until his death on September 11, 2006. Doris’s children were already grown and married when she met Muriel and he came with four of his own, but she loved them all. After Muriel died, she and Floyd Cook had a friendship for 11 years until his death in 2017.

HOBBIES AND SERVICE

Doris was very active in her churches. She believed that “God’s gift to us is time; How we use it is our gift back to Him”. As a good mother, she started Girl Scout groups and became a leader if there wasn’t any in the area for her girls to attend. She did the same for GA’s through the church. She devoted many hours to The Clothes Closet at her church in Columbus and was known for her love of gardening. She also loved fishing, so much so, that Muriel bought her property with her very own catfish pond when they moved to Columbus! She loved playing dominoes, cards and games all her life. She was known to always give a helping hand; have a positive attitude and a beautiful smile.
