Bert was born in Waco, TX December 31, 1946 to Fred and Mildred Stengel who preceded him in death followed by two brothers and one sister. Bert is survived by his wife, Jean of Eddy; son, Charles and Sandra of Kaufman; daughter, Jessica and husband Bobby Land of Eddy; precious grand children whom he loved, grandsons, Dylan Stengel and Devin Land; granddaughter, Brittany Land of Eddy; sister, Rose Marie Bryson of Waco; niece, Sharon Ann and Vance Stanley of Houston and honorary son, Bobby Donahoo of Brownwood.
Bert enjoyed woodworking, gardening, canning, and making jellies to share with friends and family. He grew up at the South Waco Church of Christ and was a long-time member of Moody Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon. Bert graduated from University High School in 1965. He furthered his education in Wichita Falls at Mid-Western University where he graduated in 1972 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. He further earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Women’s University in Dallas. Bert was employed with the VA Medical Center for 28 years. Nursing was his second choice for a career. So, after his retirement he earned his teaching certificate in 1998 and began teaching science at Penelope ISD until his second retirement in 2010. This is where he found his love for teaching children. In 2001 Bert was named Region 12 education service center Teacher of the Year.
