Michael was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to Anna Mae Hall and Jabus Howington. Michael grew up in his family home in Layland, West Virginia. West Virginia was a paradise for young boys growing up and Michael took full advantage of that.  He and his friends would run up and down those hills fishing, shooting their shot guns (how he became an expert marksman in the Army).  One story that he would tell was that his grandfather asked him to break up some rock on their place while he was in town.  Next thing Michael does is get a stick of dynamite to blow it up.  He knew right where it was since his grandfather had a supply for the coal mine.  When his grandfather stopped at the country store down from the homestead, the owner said “Bill what do you have that boy doing up there with dynamite?”  Once his grandfather was sure Michael was alright, he took him behind the shed to give him a spanking but ended up laughing so hard that the spanking did not happen.

Michael joined the Army November 27, 1972 and trained as a Nuclear Weapons Tech.  He was assigned to Germany in 1973.  He was stationed for the most part along the North Sea. As he was nearing his 20 years in service, he was stationed at Ft. Hood.  While serving there Operation Desert Storm began and he was stationed along the Saudi Arabia and Iraq borders.  He then was stationed and retired out of Ft Hood.

Michael then worked years for S. W. Bell Telephone line as a lineman and then First Line Manager. From then Michael worked with Non-Profit Mission Waco and served at Church Under the Bridge.

He is survived by his wife Julie of 28 years; one sister, Jeri Derr; three nephews, Richard Morris and wife Megan, Edward Derr and wife Nikki, and Ryan Derr and wife Priscilla; sister-in-law, Linda Gilliam; nephew, Luke Gilliam and wife Jennifer; nieces, Rebekah Gilliam and Leah Gilliam; three cousins, Donnett Terry, Annette Treadway and Lynette Legg and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the following: St. Louis Catholic Church of Waco, Community Health Care of Texas Hospice, Visiting Angels and Mission Waco.
