Roy Lee Washington, 72, of Waco departed this life on Saturday, August 24, 2024, to be reunited in Holy Matrimony to the late Sheryl Powell.

Funeral Service: 11am Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel, burial to follow at Mount Calm Cemetery.

Roy Lee Washington was born on August 12, 1952 to the parentage of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Washington, Sr. Mr. Washington attended J. Newton Jenkins Elementary school. Later, he attended G. W. Carver High School and graduated in 1970. After graduating high school, he joined the Army on November 5, 1970 and proudly served two tours for his country. While in the military, Roy completed his education and training as a switchboard operator at the USA Southern Signal School – Fort Gordon Georgia in 1971. He also worked as a Central Office Supervisor. He received the National Defense Service medal as a Sharp Shooter (Rifle-M-16). After leaving the service he served in the Army Reserve until November 4, 1976. Mr. Washington also attended Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) and received an auto mechanic certification. He worked for the United States Post Office in Waco and in California where he later retired. Roy Lee Washington joined Dallas Howard A.M.E. Church at an early age. Later, he attended church in Mount Calm. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, playing bingo, watching movies and spending time with his beloved family. He also enjoyed driving nice luxury sports cars. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite these issues, he was determined and stayed strong until the very end. Our family will truly miss his long conversations, gardening adventures and funny stories that only he could explain.

Roy Lee Washington was preceded in death by parents, Gilbert Washington, Sr. and Gonay Washington; brother, Ernest (Mano) Washington and sisters, Ida (Candy) Woodson and Debra Mathews.

Roy is survived by sisters, Laura Anderson of Waco, TX, Willean Washington of Killeen, TX, Aline (George) Hackett of Knoxville, TN and brother, Gilbert Washington, Jr. of Waco, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Many of his loved ones will cherish his memory.
