Alvin was born July 22, 1950 in Sweetwater.  He served in the Texas National Guard from 1970 to 1976 where he made several jumps from airplanes and helicopters while in Airborne training. Alvin was the first student of the horticulture program at James Connally Institute in 1967. He was also the first graduate in 1971 with an Associates degree in horticulture and a bachelors degree in technical education. He then became an instructor and eventually program chairman of the horticulture and fluoriculture program at what became Texas State Technical Institute and later Texas State Technical College. After 20 years of teaching, he retired from TSTC and developed the Community Haven Program in Lacy-Lakeview and Bellmead. This program provided after school education/tutoring, community health clinics and assistance in building homes with Habitat for Humanity. Later, Alvin worked as a volunteer coordinator with Friends for Life, an organization that assists home-bound and shut-in individuals.

Alvin served many years on the school board at Connally Independent School district and was actively involved in the PTA and other community organizations. Alvin loved spending time with his wife, children and grand-children. Most of all, Alvin loved serving his Lord and Savior. He began his ministry in 1967 as a song leader. Over the remainder of his life, the Lord used his talents of music and teaching to serve in many capacities. He sang, played the accordion, led nursing home ministries, taught Sunday School classes, served as a deacon and was a disciple to many individuals.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Janice Patterson of almost 51 years; son, Keith and wife, Heidi Patterson of Van Alstyne, Texas; daughter, Michelle and husband, Michael Overcash of Forney, Texas; five beloved grandchildren, Aaron and Linnsay Overcash and Jonathan, Luke and Andrew Patterson; three siblings; brothers, Wayne and Kevin and wife, Goldie and sister, Diane; uncles, Wendell and wife, Suzie Patterson of Dallas, Doug Morris of San Angelo and Ray Morris and wife, Judy of Springfield, MO.

His family would like to thank the staff at Interim Health for their loving care of Alvin in his final days. They would like to mention a special thanks to Trisha, Sharon, Miriam, Patrice, Louie, Mike and Shanna.

Thank you so much! Yes we had some great times together. God bless you both.

  40. To the Patterson Family,
My name is Larry Morgan, I was a student at TSTI back in the day, ( late 80’s I believe). Mr. Patterson was one of the two instructors we had. I am so sad to hear of his passing. If I learned anything back then it was because of him. He was demanding but in a nice way. He was down to earth and you could really talk to him about things. Everyone liked him and he was one of the better teachers there. My sister in law (Denise Morgan ) had called and told me. I live in Tenn. and work at a greenhouse near Nashville. I have been in the business now for almost 30 years and Mr. Patterson helped teach and guide me to do this. He was a special man to all of us in his class. May God bless him and his family.
