Benjamin H. Green

Green

Benjamin H. Green, 82, of Woodway, TX passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 at a local nursing center.

Celebration of life services: 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 10th in the Chapel at First Baptist Church, Waco with Dr. Randall Perry officiating.

Ben was born July 15, 1933 in Romeo, MI to Benjamin and Ferne (Hoskins) Green. The family later moved to Eastland, TX. After graduating from Eastland High School; Ben attended Cisco Junior College, and finished his Bachelor’s degree at Hardin-Simmons University. During his lifetime, Ben was a music minister, teacher/bus driver/principal (all at the same time in Holly, TX), engineer, and project manager at Lockheed, as well as loving husband, father, brother and friend. After retiring from Lockheed, with over 30 years of service, Ben returned to substitute teaching in Marble Falls. Several times he was asked to fill in at the alternate school. Though it was sometimes hard, he loved it when he saw a struggling student’s eyes light up in understanding and to see their self-confidence grow as they realized success and progress in their learning experiences.

Ben’s favorite family vacations were to the Tumbling McD Dude Ranch in California where we did some trail riding, square dancing, learned to play Canasta and had some great BBQ. Ben enjoyed playing all kinds of games (played Bridge at lunch when he worked at Lockheed and was a regular for dominoes at church game nights and loved to play Bingo, especially on the cruise ships). During Ben’s tenure at Lockheed Missiles & Space, Ben had the opportunity to watch several moon launches from land and sea (even from the deck of a submarine).

Ben had a sweet tooth, his favorites being pecan pie, lemon meringue pie and maple nut or butter brickle ice cream. Ben was also a huge fan of chicken fried steak (told stories about George’s “Chicken Fried Steak so big it was falling off the plate” for so many years we all thought it was a tall tale until we went to George’s), Bar-B-Que ribs (picture him with the sauce dripping down to his elbows), and he would never choose between pumpkin and pecan pie at Thanksgiving, he always requested a slice of each. Ben was a slow talker, he thought about his words before he said them out loud. Ben played the cornet and sang tenor in school and church choirs and also led congregational singing.

Having lost both their spouses; Ben and Joy (Dollahite), former high school sweethearts, got reacquainted during a reunion in 2000. They married on February 14, 2001. Together, they enjoyed cruising and road trips. They were active members of First Baptist Church of Waco, including the Agape program. Ben loved the Lord and served faithfully on many committees in the church including pastor search and on the Board of the Church Foundation.

He touched many lives, was loved by many, and will be greatly missed.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; wife of over 40 years, Beverly Boyd Green; and brother, Otis Asa Green.

Ben is survived by wife Joy Lynne Green; children, Paula Green, Pamela Reaves and husband James, Ben Green IV, and Melody Green; step-daughter, Laura Gardner and husband Timothy; grandchildren, John and Joel Reaves, Kevin Burgess, Ben Green V and wife Emily, and Casey Green; great grandson, Brantley Green; sister, Yvonne Wise; sister-in-law, Norma Green and husband Jerald; niece, Holly Green; and nephews, James Green, and Charles Chaney, plus several cousins.

I am so sorry to learn about our Eastland, Texas High School friend Ben Green. I knew Ben Green real well. And also Joy Lynn Robinson. Since I worked at A&P Store in Eastland for many years I even knew both of their mothers. I was 6′ 3″, but I always had to look up at ben Green’s face! Ben seemed to always be happy to see you! Another very good Eastland Maverick gone to be in his Lord’s big round up! James Douglas Crabtree
