Carol was born in Waco on January 29, 1948 to L.A. and Dorothy Scarborough. Carol attended Waco schools and was a 1966 graduate of University High School. After graduation, she attended Sam Houston State College as a journalism major. In 1968, she married Don Martin of Houston and welcomed their daughter, Traci Ann, in 1969 and son, Damon Martin in 1971.
Carol’s work career spanned from a substitute teacher at her children’s elementary school to Payroll Manager for major corporations of Houston. In 1996, she was President of the Texas Payroll Conference. Carol joined MMI National Corporation in 2006 as Payroll Manager. All through her life and career, she made so many friends across the United States. Carol retired this past June.
Carol loved her family and friends and enjoyed life to the fullest. Some of her pastime was spent doing ceramics, reading, writing and coming back to Waco often. In 2016, she attended her 50th High School Reunion, catching up with old friends. Thanks to social media she was in close contact with so many of her lifelong friends. Three very close friends, Emily Kapavik Cates, Judy Claverie Kucko and David Sautte “L&LF” have remained in her heart.
Carol had two close neighbors that she cherished for many years, June and Amy. Carol’s adopted sister, Carol T, as we refer to her as was a co-worker and a very close friend for 28 years. Also, “Greg” whom she shared many lunches with over the years was another good friend. Several years ago, she found another true friend, “Ricky”. Ricky has been her rock recently. Thank you Ricky!!!
I think we are seeing a pattern. Carol was a rare jewel, looking at the positive side, caring about others and a nurturing soul. She touched many people via phone or words with friends. She has left a hole in so many of us. As a Christian, we know she is now with her family watching down on us to make sure we dot all the “I’s” and cross all the “T’s” in her obituary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.A. and Dorothy Scarborough; and siblings, Louis A. Scarborough, Ronnie Scarborough and Jo Ann Adams.
Survivors include daughter, Traci Ann Laberto and husband, Steve, of Round Rock; son, Damon Richard Martin and wife, Karen of The Woodlands; granddaughters, Evelyn Rios and husband, Mikeal Rios of Round Rock, Sydney Martin of The Woodlands and Kaitlyn Martin of The Woodlands; sister, Lynda McCown of Waco; sister-in-law, Angela Scarborough; and several nieces, nephews and her beloved dog, Abby.
Place of Service: Lake Shore Funeral Home , 5201 Steinbeck Bend; Waco, TX 76708

Oh Lynda, this makes my heart ache; however, I will always have the fond, fun, and memorable times with my very good friend. I know your grieving is rare now, but a time will come when thoughts of Carol will bring a smile to your face, not a year to your eyes.
I will miss you SO MUCH!!! I met Carol some 5 or 6 years ago which she started as my client than formed very quickly into a friendship over the years.

Carol was a dear friend. She always put others before herself – going out of her way to help people.
I take solace in the words of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore: “Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”
May her soul Rest in Eternal Peace. Amen.

Carol was such a sweet person. She will be missed and my condolences to her family.
My heart is breaking💔. When we were young teenagers, she was my first love. Our friendship lasted throughout the next 50+ years. Carol’s heart was full of the purest love for others. The Scarborough family was always there for me as a wayward teenager. All my love to Carol and Lynda, both my adopted sisters. L&LF, Dave Sautte
Carol will be missed…
My experience with Carol Martin was always very positive. She did remember details and ensured that the paychecks where done correctly. But most importantly she did it with a “SMILE” that you could hear over the phone. She took great pride in making sure that she took CARE of the problems that she found and she always answered her phone. As busy as she was she was always cheerful. Rest in Peace and my condolences for her friends, colleagues and FAMILY.
Ms. Carol was the first person I met when I started at MMI. She was so caring and always nice. She would always tell me about her Christmas trees and how she loved the holidays. She would keep her tree up year round because she loved looking at it and it was so festive. I will miss you greatly. My condolences to the Martin family. Your mother was a wonderful person. We will be praying for you.
While I did not meet Carol in person, we did exchange phone calls, emails and messages. She was always warm and friendly to me, even if I tried to move the payroll needle to my benefit.

Your family is in my heart and prayers during this difficult time. Carol was one of my dearest friends and I treasure our moments together. We started at MMI around the same time and quickly became confidants. I have so many sweet memories of our long talks of family, work, Elvis, Scentsy, Mary Kay, the color purple, the love of sweets, and the love of God. She was my sounding board on many occasions and always had the right words to lift me up on those tough days. May you find peace in knowing that she is in God’s presence and we will see her again soon. She’s likely decorating her beautiful mansion, catching up with friends and family gone before, and basking in the greatness of God’s glory. In many ways, I’m jealous. I’ll love and miss you my sweet friend! See you soon!

We talked about her retirement and communicated after she’d left. I am so very sorry for your loss. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
I so loved you being a part of my family from the moment you were born. You were precious to Doris and “Uncle Kermit” Bill Horn (my parents). Circumstances caused us to drift apart. But am so thankful that we were able to reconnect a few years ago. My heart aches that we did not get the opportunity to meet again in person. You will always be in my heart. Love you.
