Cecil Jean Carter, 87, of Waco passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Visitation: 6-8pm on Friday October 4, 2024 at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Service: 11am Saturday October 5, 2024 at Carver Park Baptist Church, 1020 Herring Ave. Waco, Tx. Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Cecil Jean Carter was born on January 18, 1937, in Waco, Texas, to Faye Lee Williams and Marion Vascus Dawson, and was later lovingly adopted by Calvin Touchstone. Raised in Waco, Cecil attended Waco schools, she was a graduate of AJ Moore High School and continued her education at Paul Quinn College and Texas Women’s University, earning her BA in Education. Cecil lived a life filled with love, faith and dedication to her family, friends and community. Her strong Christian faith was the foundation of her life, and she was an active member of several organizations including the Carver Park Women’s Ministry, Senior Saints, the Hollywood Addition Association and the AJ Moore High Alumni. Cecil cherished her church, being a life long member of Carver Park Baptist Church, she looked forward to hearing the daily devotions of Rev. Gaylon Foreman, as well as her meaningful conversations with her Senior Saints. Education was vital to Cecil and she dedicated her life to teaching, tutoring and mentoring others. She was a lifelong educator who continued to pour into the lives of others until her transition to be with the Lord. Her wisdom, guidance and nurturing spirit made her a mother figure to many. Cecil was known for her vibrant personality and her love for life’s simple joys. She enjoyed gardening, reading, birdwatching, traveling and had a passion for fashion. She was always positive, with a bright smile and a willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Cecil was preceded in death by parents; Faye Lee Holmes, Marion “Jim” Vascus Dawson and Calvin Touchstone; brother, James V. Johnson; daughter, Janet R. Walker; and great-grandchildren, Ashley and Anthony Carter.
Cecil is survived by her beloved children; Melanie (Edward), Brian (Lisa), and Anecia “Pooh.” She was the cherished grandmother of Anthony, Marion, Michael, Christopher, Dominique and Tracie; a loving great-grandmother to Christopher (CJ), Christian, Unity, Dominique (DJ), Cassidy, Journey and Harmony. She also leaves behind her nephew, James V. Johnson, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Cecil was supported in life by her special “assigned angels on Earth”; Billye Rhae Mayhorn, Beverly Davis, Roslyn Dawson, Glenda Jackson, Angela Thomas and Celia Compian.
Cecil Jean Carter’s legacy of faith, love and service will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Her warmth, kindness and spirit will be deeply missed, but her memory will be cherished forever.

I remember going to visit Janet, Mrs. Carter would holler “Ms. Debo is here, come on in, let me make you some coffee”. We would sit and talk for hours about the history of Waco and my family. Oh, how the time would fly by. I really cherish those moments. Especially when she would say “we are all family”.
