Danny Alan Gumpert, lovingly known as “Captain Dan”, 65 most recently of Rockport, passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving family and closest friends, Tuesday, September 19, 2017.
Memorial Service: Friday, September 29, 2017 at 12:00PM at Central Texas State Veteran’s Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, TX 76542. The family invites those who wish to do so, to gather with them at the VFW Post #9192, 301 Wolf Street, Killeen, TX 76541 and process from there to the cemetery for Captain Dan’s service, where the United States Marine Honor Guard will render military honors, honoring Dan’s service to his country. After the service Dan’s welcomes everyone to gather back at the VFW for a Victory Party.
Dan was born August 23, 1952 in Dallas, Texas to the late, Kenneth Lee and Hazel Pauline Hunsaker Gumpert. Dan served his country honorably for 13 years in the United States Marine Corp. from 1984 to 1988. While in the Marines, Dan worked as a jet mechanic. Dan married the love of his life, Orpha Jean Dickerson, September 17, 1988. Together they have lived in the Fulton and Rockport and for the past eight years on their 1974 Chris Craft Boat. Dan was lovingly known as “Captain Dan” because of his love for boating and fishing. Dan and Jean have been long haul truck drivers for Old Dominion Transportation for the past 15 years, and logged over 3 million miles accident free in their travels across the United States. Dan and Jean came to the Central Texas area just a few weeks ago to get away from the path of Hurricane Harvey, it was while here that Dan’s cancer took a turn, he will be truly missed by all truckers on the road he has traveled and all the fisherman he has cast a line beside. Dan was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Hazel Gumpert and his sister, Paula Gumpert.
Dan leaves to cherish her memory, his loving wife of over 29 years, Jean Gumpert of Rockport; daughter, Lisa Gumpert; brother, Kenneth Lee Gumpert, II and his wife Judy; sister, Marla Gumpert; grandchildren, Brent Allen Massey and Kaitlyn Brooke Massey; along with numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Dan’s family would like to thank their friends and family here in the Central Texas area for taking them in when they were displaced by Hurricane Harvey and for giving Dan a safe and comfortable place to spend his last days here on earth.
