Horace Daniel “Dan” Wright, 71, “Pop” of Abbott, tragically passed away Friday, April 14, 2023 from injuries sustained while serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral Service: 11AM Friday, April 21 at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel
Dan was born October 14, 1951 in Falfurris. He was the first of five siblings born to Horace and Betty Wright.
Dan retired from Holt Cat in December of 2021 after 45 years of service. He bought his little ranch in Abbott and promptly decided to join the volunteer fire department. He loved serving others in any way he could. He truly had a servant’s heart. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing, but his greatest pastime was watching his grandchildren in their activities.
Dan never met a stranger and left an impression on everyone he met. He had an infectious smile that everyone loved. Dan loved the Lord with all his heart and his family was his world. All he ever wanted in life was for everyone to be happy. Heaven truly gained an angel April 14, 2023, and “I am certain that if anything is left lying around on the streets of gold it wouldn’t be left for long, Pop’s got it!”
Dan will be missed by so many but we can rejoice in knowing we will meet again.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Gene Smith; and two nephews.
Dan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan of Abbott; son, Brent Wright and wife Lisa, along with grandchildren, Aiden, Carson, and Brooke, all of Frisco; mother-in-law, Barbara Smith of Valley Mills; sisters, Anne and Tommy Doran of Georgetown, and Teresa and Rocky Ryan of Corpus Christi; brothers, Wayne and Diane Wright of Ft. Worth, and Paul and Dee Wright of Midland; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws.
In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Abbott Volunteer Fire Department or Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force.
Dan, was my friend and co worker, he is a caring and giving person. He always expressed his love for his wife and son. He felt over the moon with his beautiful grandchildren speaking of them with such love. I am blessed to have known him.

My deepest condolences for the Wright Family. I never had the privilege of meeting Dan in person, however spoke with him on several occasions as a field tech for Holt Cat. I always enjoyed speaking with Dan, he had a cheerful heart and always was willing to help and point me in the right direction. Holt truly lost a valuable asset when he retired and the world has lost a truly remarkable soul. My heart is heavy with sorrow knowing he has gone to a more peaceful place, but we will meet again.
My deepest sympathy. Dan was such a great person and I truly enjoyed working with him at Holt. He will be greatly missed. Sending prayers and love.
Susan: We lost touch a long time ago but I have always been grateful for you for helping me get the job at Bailey. I know this is a heart breaking situation and even though I never met your husband, I remember you talking about him and he sounded like a wonderful husband and father. I will pray for you.
My brother was truly a loving person. He was the leader of our pack. We fought, played and protected each other., but Danny’s strong love for Christ and his family was who he was.
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
I had the pleasure of knowing Dan when we worked together ar Darr for several years. Always a pleasure to be around . Shared lots of stories and a lot of laughs back then. A real good man that loved his family and made you proud to call him a friend. All my best to Susan and the family.
We did know him but, live in the small town of Abbott. He was a hero-putting his life on the line for the betterment of others. God bless his family & may he rest in peace.

My brother-in-law was a real life superhero! His gift was being a doer, helper, fixer! I will always have memories of all of us going to Corpus for holidays. Danny would walk through the door and within the first 30 minutes of being there he had sized up his mom’s house and yard and made a list of everything that needed to be repaired, trimmed up, or fixed. He delighted in showing his love by helping others. He had a heart bigger than the state of Texas! But the most important thing in his life was God and family. His face would light up with pride when talking about Susan, Brent, and his 3 precious grand children. They were his world! No doubt Danny burst into sudden glory as he met Jesus and heard the words “ Well done my good and faithful servant!”

The world has lost an incredible life. You have our sincere condolences, and our deepest sympathy,
Susan, Brent and family,
My most heartfelt sympathy for your loss of your beloved husband, father and a friend to so many people.
Dan will live forever within our hearts and through all the wonderful things that he has been a part of within his life time. He touched so many people with his kind heart, his contagious smile and was admired by all who came in contact with him.
I will always remember when my Grandson, Joey would spend the weekend over my house, without fail there would be a knock on the door and there was Dan with a plate of warm homemade chocolate chip cookies for Joey. The thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
