Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online Guest Book at www.LakeShoreFuneralHome.com.
Lela was born December 25, 1916 in the Ewing Community to the late Rob and Mallie Love Hunt. She graduated from Gatesville High School in the early 1930’s, where she played on the Gatesville Lady Hornet’s Basketball team. On April 17, 1943, she married O. R. “Dick” Sellers, and together they raised two beautiful children. She worked many years at Cox’s Department store, both the downtown and the Westview Village locations. Lela was an avid sports fan, who loved watching basketball, especially the Baylor Lady Bears.
Lela was a long time member of St. John Methodist Church, known now as Central United Methodist Church, and a founding member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She found joy giving back to her community with her volunteer service through Meals on Wheels. She was a very special person who cared for others. Every person that entered her kitchen was touched by her hospitality, as she always treated guests like family, welcoming them with a glass of iced tea and the best food that was home made with love. She became fondly known to many as “Granny”. Lela had a special place in her heart for North 27th St. in Waco, the neighborhood where she raised her family. She will be greatly missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 55 years, Dick; one son, Richard Gary Sellers; and two brothers, Troy Lee Hunt and Edwin Hunt.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Markum and husband Mike, of Waco; four grandchildren, Chris Sellers and wife, Elvia of Seabrook, Kim Pirkle and husband, Neal of Lorena, Lee Sellers of Waco, and Allison Heath of Waco; nine great-grandchildren, Richard H. Sellers, Olan Sellers, Nathan Sellers, Hunter Heath, Hannah Heath, Hudson Rape, Graham Pirkle, Riley Pirkle, and Nash Pirkle; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Randall Markum, Ted Conner, Johnny Bingham, Mario Zuniga, Manuel Gonzales, and Donald Keltner.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the employees of Sellers Sales Company, for their years of care and love; you were considered extended family, and we thank you. Thank you to Dr. Barbin and Tracy with “Right At Home”. And a special heartfelt Thank You to Naomi Lee, for over 30 years of dedicated service and friendship to Lela.
