Lena Mae (Bumpers) Carver, 94, better known as “Nub”, passed away after a long and full life Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
“Nub” was born in 1927 on the farm in Dawson, TX, to James O. and Betty Mae Bumpers. Her dad, J.O., said she didn’t look any bigger than a nubbin ear of corn when she was born – the nickname stuck! “Nub” and her sister, Barbara(Bumpers) Savage “Bylo”, grew up singing and playing the piano and singing at the First United Methodist Church Dawson. Music was such an important part of Nub and her sister’s lives. As young girls “Nub” and “Bylo” attended the Stamps School of Music in Dallas, and singing in the Corsicana Courthouse every Friday night. “Nub” attended Texas Weslyan College and married her high school sweetheart, James Eugene Carver, after she graduated. “Nub” and Gene moved to the Texas City area where “Nub” taught 3rd grade and finished her Masters at Univ. of Houston while Gene worked at Union Carbide. Gene was a true horseman; a roper and rancher. “Nub” spent many hours travelling to and sitting at rodeo arenas watching Gene rope. They still have many friends from the Texas Senior Pro Rodeo Assoc. After retiring “Nub” and Gene moved back to Dawson, TX, where she played the piano at the Methodist Church each Sunday until finally retiring at 90 years old. In the last few years “Nub” had been active distributing blankets, snacks and cold weather gear to the homeless along with her family; Mike, Annette and Mackie Cantrell, and Sinjin Savage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.O. and Betty Bumpers; husband, James E. Carver; son, James P. “Pat” Carver; and sister, Barbara J. (Bumpers)Savage. Lena Mae is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Dunn; grandson, Dalton Dunn; niece, Annette Cantrell and husband, Mike; great-niece, Macca Cantrell; and great-nephew, Darryl Sinjin Savage. A special debt of gratitude to her team at Compassus Hospice of Waco as well as Reschaun Ewings.
Thank you all for making “Nub”s last few months so wonderful! You all are true ANGELS!!!
