Murlin “Mac” McMillan was born Murlin Dewel McMillan December 11, 1926 in Lawrenceburg, TN. He was the fourth child of Morris McClain McMillan and Zulemar McKinney McMillan. The family lived in Tennessee before moving to Arkansas to open a general store. Eventually the family settled in Goodwill, LA.

After serving in the Navy at the same time as two of his brothers, Murlin lived and worked in Louisiana and Texas before he and his wife, Pat, moved to Elm Mott, TX in the early 1960s. After attending barber college in Waco, Murlin began his five-decade career as a barber, eventually opening his own shop at the corner of Crest Drive and Patricia in Lacy Lakeview. Murlin served as a councilman on the Northcrest City Council for several years.

In 1952 Murlin met Patti Williamson in Goodwill, LA and they were married two years later November 27, 1954. Murlin and Pat raised two daughters, Cynthia McMillan Hykel and Tonja McMillan Norwood. A devoted family man, Murlin made his wife and daughters a priority and welcomed two sons-in-law, Ken Hykel and Chris Norwood. His pride and joy were his three grandchildren, Stephen Hykel, Kevin Norwood, and Katie Norwood.

Murlin enjoyed singing karaoke with his friends, listening to classic country music, fishing, boxing, good conversation over cold watermelon, discussing faith and politics, watching westerns, reading his Bible, and spending time with family.

Murlin is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sisters, and infant daughter, Camille McMillan.

Murlin is survived by his wife, Pat (Williamson) McMillan; daughters, Cindy Hykel (Ken Hykel) of West, TX, Tonja Norwood (Chris Norwood) of Spring, TX; grandchildren, Stephen Hykel, Kevin Norwood, and Katie Taylor (John Taylor).

Condolence Messages

  1. To the family : I am so sorry for your loss. I know we shared your grief and both my dad, Paul Christopher, and Mac were in the hospital at the same time this last week on the same hall. I am glad to have shared some time with Mac’s wife and to make that connection for both Mark and myself. As all of our hearts are heavy, may you find peace during this difficult time. God Bless your family!

  2. Richard & Sue Wilshire

To Pat and Mac’s family and friends, I’m sending our prayers at this time for your loss. Mac wasn’t only my and my dad’s barber for many years but also a very good friend. I remember when my dad was getting elderly housebound and Mac would make special trips to come by his home to give him his haircuts and visit. He was 1 of a kind, May he rest in peace and cherish his memories as we will
