Nancy Marie Jackson-Powell was born February 14, 1934, in Waco, Texas to the late Levi and Savannah Johnson-Jackson. She was the 10th of 11 children.
Nancy attended Downsville High School in Downsville, Texas and graduated in 1953.
Nancy accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist church. She remained a faithful member until her health no longer permitted her to attend services. During her active years, she served on the culinary committee, Choir and Mission Presidents, prepared meals in the kitchen and assisted with every church program. When she was no longer able to attend services in person, she was always available and willing to give her input by phone.
On September 25, 1954, she married Emanuel Powell Sr. and was blessed with 3 wonderful sons. She gave them all nicknames still used today. Emanuel Jr. was Scooner or Chili, Marvin was Lil Brother, and Demetrius was Baby Don. When Nancy talked about her sons, she often referred to them as “My Boys”. Her happiest moments were having all her 3 boys by her side.
Nancy worked as a seamstress at many sewing factories until medical retirement. She always loved to hem her grandkids pants or fix a button on their shirts.
Nancy loved being in the kitchen. You could always find Chef Nancy in her kitchen preparing meals for her family, friends, and church members. According to her grandkids her collard greens, beans with ground beef, cornbread, pecan pie and peach cobbler were absolutely amazing. She enjoyed teaching her grandkids how to cook, pick and clean greens, pick pecans, shell peas, and snap the beans. Her phrase was “If you pick it, I’ll cook it”.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her son Emanuel Powell Jr., granddaughter Monica Powell, and her siblings, Herman, Willie, Irene, Paul, Ollie, Biona, John, Marvis, Pearline and Mary Jo.
She leaves to cherish her memories: Her two devoted sons, Rev. Marvin Powell (Debra) of Robinson, Texas and Demetrius Powell (Marze) of Hewitt; Texas. 9 grandchildren, Angela Cotton, Marvin Powell II (Kasey), Tori Powell (Gideon), Gemeta Powell, Shaka Powell, James Powell, Rocki Powell Horne (Dymus), PFC Rayna Powell (Jacksonville N. Carolina), Madison Powell, and Demetria Powell; 9 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
