Norma Cozort, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023.

Visitation:  6pm to 8pm Friday, December 15th at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend, Waco

Graveside Service:  10am Saturday, December 16th at Waco Memorial Park

Norma was born in Peñitas, Texas, in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley on April 19, 1931, and was raised there. She was the third child out of seven children born to Nestor Garza Sr. and San Juanita Zamora Garza.  Norma attended public schools in the Tabasco Consolidated Independent School District in the Rio Grande Valley and in McGrew, Nebraska, graduating from La Joya High School in the Rio Grande Valley. Norma attended Draughan’s Business School in San Antonio after graduating from high school. She lived in the YMCA during that time.

She was employed for 35 years in civil service working at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, Internal Revenue Service in Dallas, Texas, and Veterans Administration Regional Office in Waco, Texas. After retirement she worked at an HEB Grocery Store unit in San Antonio, Texas.

She married Jasper Donald (JD) Cozort on February 5, 1960, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She loved listening to music. Another thing she loved to do was dance. She and JD enjoyed going to dances with friends at South Waco Senior Center in Waco, Texas, as well as at dance halls in the Waco area.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Nestor Garza Jr; Ninfa (Garza) Zamora; Nerea (Garza) Treviño; Noelia (Garza) Medellin; and loving husband JD.

Norma is survived by sons, Michael Cozort and wife Edythe of Waco, Texas, Phillip Cozort and wife Kim of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Keith Cozort, Kathryn Dickerson and husband Chase, as well as well as Chris, Tyler, and Samantha Cozort; great grandchildren include Kimberlyn, Cole and Cade Cozort and Reid Dickerson; sister, Nélida (Garza) Gonzales;  brother, José Nicandro (Nick) Garza; brother-in-law, Roice Cozort; sisters-in-law, Lorene Welch and Joyce Ward, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
