Raymond Lee Spriggs Jr, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away May 20, 2023, at the age of 67 in Killeen, Texas. He was born November 28, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Raymond Lee Spriggs Sr and Gerda (Marian) Louise Spriggs.
A Celebration of Life service will be hosted at Blue Mesa in Fort Worth, with the date and time to be determined.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Ann Baker-Spriggs; daughter, Michelle Sheree Dawn Deapen; son-in-law, James Dean Deapen; cherished granddaughter, Winter Elora Deapen; brothers, Marlon Elvis Spriggs and Roger Steven Holley; sister, Gail Ann Sarap; niece, Jennifer Sarap; nephews, Jeremy Sarap and Jacob Domyanic. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Timothy Lawrence Spriggs.
A dedicated lifelong learner, Ray earned diplomas in both medical insurance and medical coding at Iverson Business School as well as pursued a passion for painting by avidly attending art courses at TCJC, greatly inspired by the works of Van Gogh.
During the Vietnam War era, Ray served two terms as an Army Medical Specialist, training at Fort Hood and stationed in Germany.
Ray passed down his love for art to his daughter, Michelle. He was also a passionate weather enthusiast and regularly attended National Weather Service Spotter Training Program seminars, with a particular fascination for tornadoes and storm chasing.
Ray’s involvement in his community left a lasting impact. He was a volunteer usher at Bass Hall, Casa Manana, and Stage West. He enjoyed morning coffee with friends at Whataburger and afternoon 42 or poker at the Lake Worth Senior Citizen Center. His dedication to the Girl Scouts earned him the “Cookie Dad” award for his invaluable support in selling cookies for his daughter’s troop. Ray’s compassion for animals was endless. He rescued, adopted, and/or fostered anywhere from just born kittens to senior abused small dogs.
In his final month, Ray found immeasurable joy in caring for his newborn granddaughter, Winter. His selfless love and nurturing spirit will forever be treasured by his family.
Raymond Lee Spriggs Jr will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, artistic expression, and service to others will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
